Description: Mom died in my Boise apartment. The weekend before she died, she
evidently spent time going back in her mind -- talking with her
maternal grandmother Walker (I asked her who she was talking to). She was non-responsive at the
end, breathing heavily and with a moderate fever. She was on heavy pain
medication. I spent time in
bed with her, curling up from behind -- I'm not sure that she
realized it. She had moved
out of Alterra assisted living 1/3/06, Boise, when her health
became to much for them to care for.
A great deal of my personality came from her -- I wish I had been
kinder to her at the end, not pushing her so much to walk more,
exercise more, eat more and be her usual independent self...

Description: Grandma (Maud) was great with gardens (her
raspberry/boysenberry/blackberry/strawberry patch is in the
background)! I stayed with
grandma and grandpa two consequitive summers -- 1954 and 1955. This picture was taken by Mrs.
Gardner (who lived across
the street). Originally, it
included grandma standing on the far right, arms folded in front
and looking at me, and grandpa on the far left, brimmed,
sweat-stained work hat on his head, standing straight, feet
slightly spread, and resting the palms of his hands (one hand on
top of the other) on the pointed handle of the shovel in front of
him (spade end down, work gloves off and laying between his palms
and the handle end). The
first print included all three of us. When she saw it, grandma
insisted that she and grandpa be croped out, and Mrs. Gardner had
that done. I have that
original image in my mind to this day, but, boy, I wish I had the
original...
